Waikato police have spent the day recovering the bodies of two men found in an abandoned mine west of Whitianga in the Coromandel Peninsula.

Police officers in white boiler suits could be seen climbing through dense scrub beside the road in order to get to the bodies.

Police declined to discuss the investigation into the pair's death, only to say the bodies will be taken to Thames where family members will formally identify them.
