A 5.2 magnitude earthquake rattled the lower North Island this afternoon.

GeoNet said the quake was centred 15km east of Tokoroa and was 199km deep.

The quake was felt around the lower North Island, Hawke's Bay and Wellington.

Duty seismologist John Ristau said these kind of deep earthquakes are often widely felt but cause little damage.
