A truck and trailer caught fire on Auckland's southern motorway this morning, causing a major traffic backlog.

Firefighters and police were called to the blaze, between Ellerslie and Greenlane, about 10.48am.

Police said the truck and trailer was travelling south when it started to smoke and burst into flames near the Ellerslie Panmure off-ramp.

Traffic was down to a single lane as emergency crews worked to control the fire and clear the scene.

There were no reported injuries.
