Eight tourists who were travelling in a minivan have been taken to Rotorua Hospital after a head-on collision on State Highway 5, halfway between Rotorua and Taupo.
The minivan was carrying six Chinese tourists and two Americans, heading for Rotorua, when the crash happened soon after 5pm.
The tour van driver, a Chinese national with a New Zealand licence, said a car coming towards his vehicle suddenly did a U-turn in front of him.
The driver of the car got out of the wreckage, hopped into another car following him and drove away, the bus driver said.
Police have so far been unable to find him.
The tourists suffered moderate bruising and some whiplash injuries.
