Tax scammers have targeted Revenue Minister Peter Dunne.

A bogus email puporting to be from his own department popped up in his ministerial inbox this morning.

It claims the recipient is eligible to receive a tax return pay-out - but must register first.  The message sent to Dunne said he could claim $185.44.

The hoax emails are a phishing scam. A link directs victims to a fake webpage with and IRD logo where they are asked to enter personal details.

Dunne said the scammers "aren't very bright". He forwarded the message to IRD and is warning people not to be caught out.

''IRD does not send out unsolicited emails to people telling them they have a tax refund owing. We are not that generous,' he said. ''So all such approaches should be ignored.''
