Canadian tourist killed in Waitakaruru accident
Another tourist has been killed on Waikato roads, in a collision with a commercial truck and trailer unit.
The fatal smash happened in fine weather conditions at the intersection of State Highways 2 and 25 at Waitakaruru at 1.40pm.
The road was closed for several hours as the emergency services freed the surviving driver and examined the scene.
Police described the circumstances of the crash last night.
A man was driving a white Nissan from Coromandel towards Auckland with a Canadian woman in the passenger seat.
They approached the intersection with SH2 and pulled out intending to turn right. At the same time a J-Swap truck and trailer unit was heading north on SH2 and T-boned the Nissan.
The woman died at the scene.
The driver was taken to Auckland Hospital in a moderate condition.
It was not known whether the driver was also from Canada or what his relationship with the deceased woman was.
The accident was yet another example of foreigners dying on the region's roads.
In February, Canadian tourist Michele Smith died after the campervan her husband was driving and a truck collided at the notorious Waitomo Caves Rd-SH3 intersection.
In September, American Kenneth Stithem was killed at the same intersection during a horror smash with a cement truck.
Mr Stithem was honeymooning with his wife Kirsten Steinke, who also suffered critical injuries in the collision.
