A whitebaiter has died after falling in to the Otaki River.

Sergeant Slade Sturmey said the elderly Otaki man was whitebaiting on the northern side of the Otaki River mouth with friends when he fell in to the water as he was retrieving his whitebait net.

His body had been removed from the scene for examination and the coroner would decide the cause of death.

Inspector Ian Harris said the man was found by a member of the public about midday.

CPR was performed by emergency services.
