Investigators say a fatal house fire in Auckland last night does not appear to be suspicious.

One person died and a second was hospital with burns after fire broke out in the house in the western suburb of Glendene.

The fire service was called to the two-storey home in Madigan Place around 8.10pm last night. A spokeswoman said they arrived to find the house fully ablaze and one person locked inside.

Detective sergeant Eugene Pickett said the fire started in the home's bottom flat. There were only the two people inside.

Fire investigators were yet to establish the cause of the blaze but it didn't appear to be suspicious, he said.

Detectives were still trying to work out if the person was "locked" inside and if so how that happened, he said.

The injured man is likely to move to a burns unit later today or tomorrow.
