Searchers have been unable to get to a Chilean tourist who is lost in a forest park near Masterton and ill equipped for an overnight stay.
Wairarapa Search and Rescue are currently searching for the 29-year-old man, who became disoriented in the vicinity of Mount Holdsworth in the Tararua Forest Park.
He had gone to Mt Holdsworth for a day hike and lost the track on his return journey to Holdsworth Lodge, police said.
He alerted authorities to his predicament by way of a cell phone, and told searchers he was not equipped for an overnight stay.
Weather conditions are mild but the missing tourist is believed to be in the sub-alpine zone and below the bush edge.
Low cloud meant a helicopter search could not reach the area where he is believed to be, but it was hoped cloud conditions would improve by morning.
Five volunteer search teams have been deployed to the area overnight.
