A 20-year-old grossly intoxicated Mexican man got more than he bargained for when he decided to jump out of bushes in Queenstown.
Senior Constable Chris Blackford said the drunken man decided to get into bushes on Robins Rd at 1.15am yesterday.
He thought it would be funny to jump out and scare a female passerby but he failed to notice her boyfriend, who punched the Mexican in the face.
The 20-year-old was knocked to the ground and the couple left but a member of the public called St John, who treated the man for intoxication.
"When you're grossly intoxicated your sense of humour might not be the same as non-intoxicated people," Blackford said.
The Mexican was previously warned about his behaviour while drunk, he said.
