The Department of Conservation has been convicted over health and safety failings leading to the death of a volunteer worker.
Mihai Muncus-Nagy was working as a volunteer on Raoul Island when he died on January 2.
He was carrying out the weekly sea temperature reading on the island when he disappeared. He has never been found, but is presumed drowned.
DOC representatives appeared at the Auckland District Court today.
DOC was found, as an employer, not to have taken all "practicable steps to ensure Mr Muncus-Nagy’s safety whilst working as a volunteer on Raoul Island".
John Howard, from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, said the "unfortunate tragedy" underlined the need for "employers to be constantly vigilant about workplace health and safety".
"In this case Doc, despite identifying the hazard, did not take all necessary steps to effectively control the risk."
Doc has already paid $60,000 in reparation to Muncus-Nagy’s family.
