One person is dead after a car rolled and burst into flames west of Hamilton.
It is believed two men and two women, in their late teens or early 20s, were in the car which was heading south near Rotokauri when it rolled.
Two people were thrown from the vehicle. One of them, a young woman, was killed.
Another person has been hospitalised but is in a stable condition, police said.
A witness said the car appeared to lose control while rounding a bend, and rolled through a fence before coming to rest upright and bursting into flames.
The other occupants escaped from the vehicle.
Meanwhile, one person is dead after a crash involving two cars on State Highway 3 in Taranaki.
The crash happened near Ngaere about 6pm.
Police confirmed one person was dead after the crash.
Police and St John Ambulance staff were at the scene and the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter had been sent to transport a critically injured man to hospital.
