A man is in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital after being hit by a train in Ngaruawahia last night.
Police said they were called to the scene about 1am, after the train driver reported seeing something on the tracks.
Communications spokesman Barry Smalley said: "The driver's stopped, as he saw something lying on the tracks.
"It was a male, believed to be caucasian and in his 20s."
He said police believed the man may have lost an arm, as well as suffering other severe injuries.
The line was closed after the incident, but reopened about 4am.
The man was taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance where he remains in a critical condition.
