Firefighters have been battling a blaze in horticultural buildings at Nelson's Nayland College tonight.

Nelson Fire Service said four fire engines were sent about 7pm after the service received multiple calls.

A spokesman said callers advised of "flames and smoke showing throughout the area".

He said on arrival fire crews found two garages "well-involved". Each fire was about 50 square metres.

School principal Rex Smith said the fire was now under control.

The fire service could not yet say how or where the fire had begun, he said.

A shed in the horticulture growing area had been alight and the fire service was still dampening the area down.

Smith said that ''to his knowledge''  there had been no one inside the shed at the time.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
