Four people are dead from three North Island crashes today.
Two riders died in a serious crash involving a van and four motorbikes on State Highway 3 just north of the Normanby overpass in Taranaki.
A third rider died after a head-on crash with a car on State Highway 2 at Opotiki, in the eastern Bay of Plenty.
The fourth person to die was the driver of a car on State Highway 1 in Northland.
Mark Oliver from Central Police Communications confirmed two people died at the scene of the Taranaki crash.
He said a third person had been taken to Taranaki Base Hospital in critical condition. The condition of a fourth person is unknown.
A witness at the crash said that the scene was, "an absolute mess".
It is understood the motorcycle riders were taking part in the Round the Mountain Charity Toy Run. The rest of the motorcyclists voted to continue the ride in honour of the deceased.
Police Serious Crash Unit personnel were at the scene.
Sergeant Mark Oliver said another motorcyclist had been airlifted to Wellington Hospital with a broken ankle.
The man crashed on Hinakura Rd, near Martinborough about 5pm.
The Opotiki crash happened just west of Baird Road at 5.55am.
The dead man is a 21-year-old farmer who lived and worked locally, the two occupants of the car were not injured in the crash.
Police have asked for anyone with information to contact the Opotiki Police Station on (07) 3151110.
The man who died while driving his car was involved in a three-car
crash just north of the Prescott Rd/State Highway 1 roundabout, at Ruakaka near Whangarei about 4pm.
Emergency services at the scene treated another person in a critical condition and two others who were moderately injured.
One lane was blocked while the Serious Crash Unit conducted an investigation.
Motorists were advised to expect delays and avoid the area where possible.
