A major fire has gutted the building of a roofing company in St Johns, in east Auckland, this morning.

Emergency services were called to Felton Mathew Ave after receiving a 111 call around 11am.

Tania Matthews, fire service spokeswoman, said the blaze was "well-involved" in the 50x25m AHI Roofing building when crews arrived.

"There are currently 16 fire appliances in attendance and fire-fighters are still attacking the blaze," Matthews said.

"The aerial appliances knocked the fire down where crews wearing VA apparatus building were entering the building to dampen down inside."

Police have cordoned off a large section of the road and it's believed residents in nearby houses have been evacuated.

No-one was been injured. Emergency services were still on the scene.

The cause of the fire was not known.
