Police say the sudden death of a young boy in the small town of Raetihi two weeks ago is suspicious.
Antony Christensen was found dead at his home on December 7 by a family member.
"Preliminary results from testing showed prescription medicine in his system," Detective Senior Sergeant Keith Borrell said.
"These are only initial findings and we are not in a position at this stage to say what caused the death of Antony as we are waiting on final test results."
The investigation was continuing.
"We are still in the process of interviewing Antony's family who have been helpful. However, we still want to hear from anyone who may have some information on his last movements."
Locals in the township were shocked about the boy's death.
Jayesh Patel, owner of the Raetihi Pricecutters Foursquare, said the news affected all 800 residents.
''Everyone knew the boy because it's a small town. We were shocked, we couldn't believe it would happen to him. Everyone's feeling shocked.
''He would come in every evening and every morning to my store from school. He was a very good student at Raetihi Primary School. He was fantastic, a well-behaved boy. He was a nice kid.''
