A man is dead after a serious crash on State Highway 2, near Takapau in southern Hawke's Bay.
The man in his forties, who was the driver of a northbound Mitsubishi Chariot, died in a collision with the southbound truck on the Takapau plains, at around 10am today, police said.
The Mitsubishi Chariot was extensively damaged. The man was the sole occupant of the car.
The truck driver was badly shaken but otherwise unhurt.
Police said the fatal crash was one of two that happened this morning within 5km of one another.
Emergency services and the serious crash unit were attending.
Central Communications shift commander Sergeant Andy Dow said diversions were in place, and the section between Snee Road and SH50 would be closed until at least 1.30pm.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution and expect delays in the area.
