A Greytown man in his 50s is dead after his inflatable dinghy flipped in Wairarapa.
Police rescued his two companions, a man and a woman, after their boat capsized on the Waiohine River, but the man's body was later recovered.
The boat capsized near the swing bridge at the foot of the Tararua Ranges just after 3pm today, police say.
Members of the public heard calls for help and contacted police who responded with the support of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
One person was able to make it to safety quickly, and another was rescued just after 5pm by a jet boat.
The dead man's family are being contacted by police and his name has not yet been released.
