Police have named the man who died in a diving accident at Whangaparaoa.

He was Robert Terry Farquhar of Inglewood.

The 29-year-old was found by the police dive squad off Matakatia Bay on Sunday afternoon after an extensive search the day before failed to find him, Sergeant Jamie Bissett, of Orewa police, said.

Farquhar had been diving with friends in the bay and was swimming back to the beach about 4pm on Saturday when he disappeared from view.

His death has been referred to the coroner and an investigation, including an autopsy, will be carried out to determine what caused his death.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
