MOUNTAIN RESCUE: Taupo's Greenlea rescue helicopter plucked an injured woman to safety from Mt Tauhara near Taupo on the brink of darkness on Wednesday.

Taupo's Greenlea rescue helicopter has plucked an injured woman to safety from the top of a mountain on the brink of darkness.

The climber had twister her knee at the top of Mt Tauhara near Taupo late this evening, pilot Nat Every said.

"Fortunately the helicopter arrived just prior to the cloud enveloping the top of the mountain, and with the use of it search light was able to hover load the injured women and her daughter who had remained with her to safety."

She was taken to Taupo Hospital.

Earlier, the chopper and its crew were called to a road accident between between Taupo and Turangi.

A man driving north had left the road and crashed into a block wall in front of a roadside house.

He was taken to Rotorua hospital with neck and spinal injuries.
