An elderly couple have been seriously injured after a car crash on the outskirts of Hamilton.

The two were trapped in their vehicle after they collided with another car, sending both vehicles into a ditch.

They have been freed from their car, but remain in a serious condition in Waikato Hospital.

Emergency services arrived at the scene of the crash within minutes and fire fighters worked for about an hour to free the trapped couple.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Steve Smith said the crash happened near an intersection at Puketaha.

The cars collided about 10.25am and the scene around the crash had been closed to traffic, but all roads were now reopened.
