A fire in Nelson's Maitai Valley sparked by lightning last night continues to rage this morning.
The fire had engulfed 1000 square metres of forest last night, fire south communications shift manager Karl Patterson said.
The blaze was started by a lightning storm about 8.30pm. It was not threatening any houses, Patterson said.
The Rural Fire Service would return to the fire this morning after attempts to extinguish it last night were unsuccessful.
Two helicopters were used to fight the fire, which was on land not easily accessible by road.
