A 75-year-old man who died while on a hunting trip in the Hollyford valley has been identified as Cameron Dickson Maclarty, of Dunedin.
Mr Maclarty collapsed while hunting with a teenage companion about 5pm yesterday.
Te Anau police were alerted to the incident when the teenager went to Gunns Camp to raise the alarm and returned to help his companion with a camp staff member and a roading contractor.
However, by the time rescuers reached Mr Maclarty he was already dead, police said.
A helicopter was sent from Te Anau with a doctor and police search and rescue personnel. Mr Maclarty was pronounced dead at the scene.
The actions of the teenager were praised by Sergeant Tod Hollebon, of Te Anau.
The young companion did a very good job marking a trail out to the road and assisting the search and rescue effort, Mr Hollebon said.
Mr Maclarty's death was not suspicious and has been referred to the coroner, police said.
