Police will resume searching for a missing Australian swimmer near Taupo in the morning after searching into the night.
An Australian man in his 20s was reported missing near the Full James Rapids on the Waikato River in Taupo about 6.15pm.
The man, who was travelling with friends, was seen in the river calling for help. A female friend ran to river but the man could not be found.
Police, Coastguard and the harbour master searched the river until light faded tonight and will be joined by the police dive squad tomorrow.
