The body of an Australian man who went missing while swimming in the Waikato River has been found.
Members of the Police National Dive Team found 21-year-old Mathew Slade, of Melbourne, close to where he was last seen, downstream of the Aratiatia Dam in Taupo, about 2pm.
He went for a swim shortly before 6.15pm yesterday and then started calling for help.
A women he was with ran to the riverbank but the Mr Slade disappeared from view.
His parents flew to New Zealand this morning and had been waiting for news close to the search scene.
Mr Slade travelled to New Zealand on December 22 and was planning to stay in the country until March riding and training ponies for the World Championships of the Equestrian Mounted Games.
He had previously represented Australia in this sport and was intending to compete this weekend in a pairs event and in February in a team event.
Police are providing support for the family along with the Australian High Commission.
The family do not want to comment at this stage as they come to terms with the news.
