Canterbury crews battle house fires
Canterbury firefighters battled two house fires overnight - one considered suspicious.
A Fire Service spokeswoman said fire crews from New Brighton and Wainoni were called to an abandoned house at Lever Tce, in New Brighton, about 10.45pm.
The blaze, which was "well-involved" on arrival, was being treated as suspicious and police and fire safety were investigating, she said.
Police cordoned off the property and a scene guard remained overnight.
A fire safety officer would investigate the cause of the blaze this morning.
Fire crews from Little River and Akaroa were also called to a house fire at an Onewa Flat Rd property, in Duvauchelle, at midnight.
The blaze was "going well" when firefighters arrived, she said.
The fire started in the garage, where it was contained, but the house was also damaged.
She understood there was no-one in the house at the time.
