A small quake shook Wellington residents just before dawn this morning.
GeoNet said a 4.7 magnitude earthquake hit 65 km north-east of French Pass, just north of the South Island, about 5.00am.
The depth of the quake was 90km.
Angie Adel, from Strathmore, Wellington, said she felt the quake at 5.03am.
"My whole bed was shaking for like 10 seconds, then very low for another 15 seconds," she said.
People woken by the quake took to twitter, with one user saying "getting shaken awake by an #earthquake certainly gets the heart pumping! #Wellington".
