A passenger was airlifted off a large cruise liner in the Hauraki Gulf tonight.
The Holland America Line's MS Oosterdam was leaving Auckland for the Bay of Islands and was just past Rangitoto when it called for help.
St John's Ambulance said a passenger had a medical emergency and was lifted off the ship by the Westpac rescue helicopter.
The ship made several figure-of-eight course changes off the northern end of Rangitoto and was widely seen on the North Shore.
The patient is now in Auckland Hospital in a serious condition.
