Police believe a man who was found seriously hurt outside a North Shore toilet block inflicted the injuries on himself.
The 40-year-old West Auckland man was found on Lake Rd, Belmont - the main road down to Devonport - about 8.30pm on Monday.
He was taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition and underwent surgery the next day.
Senior Sergeant Grant Tezlaff said they had been unable to speak to the man because of his condition but witnesses statements taken suggest he had caused the injuries himself.
"At the moment we're not looking for anyone else," he said.
"For residents, there's no need to panic."
Tetzlaff expected to speak to the man later today or during weekend and hoped he would be able to shed more light on what happened.
