A man is missing and four children have been rescued after a boat capsized near Waihi Beach.
Police said they were searching the area around Bowentown Heads at the northern entrance to Tauranga Harbour for a 52-year-old man who went missing after his pleasure craft capsized.
The vessel overturned about 5pm, but the alarm was not raised for several hours when a passing boatie discovered the overturned vessel with four children clinging to it. They were uninjured.
There has been no sign of the man who was in the boat with them.
The Westpac Rescue helicopter conducted an aerial search and ground parties searched the coastline at Bowentown Heads and Matakana Island.
No further details of the children or the missing man were immediately available.
