Van crash injures eleven

Eleven people have suffered moderate to serious injuries in a road smash between two van loads of people in a remote location south of Taumarunui this afternoon.

Two people are being flown by Taranaki Rescue Helicopter to Waikato Hospital one is in a critical condition while the other is in a serious condition.

Nine other people have moderate injuries and are being flown to Taumaranui hospital where they will be assessed and then taken to other facilities.

St John District Operation Manager Ian May said two vans with 21 people on-board collided injuring eleven people on River Road, (State Highway 43).

Police spokeswoman Sara Stavropoulos said police were notified just after 3pm.

Rescue helicopters are in the process of airlifting the injured from the scene.The crash happened in Tokirima, State Highway 43, 30km southwest of Taumarunui.
