A man was cut from the wreckage of a vehicle in Hamilton this afternoon after crashing through a steel sculpture erected on Mill St for the V8 supercar races.

There was applause from an audience that had gathered after emergency services successfully cut the man from the heavily damaged Honda hatchback.

Clarke Kurei, who witnessed the crash, said he saw the vehicle cross the centre line and smash into the sculpture.

"He just wiped out and smashed everything in his way," he said.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
