Surrounded by his family, crash victim Glen Hutchings looked as if he was sleeping as he peacefully died.

The 38-year-old had his life support turned off on Sunday morning at Wellington Hospital, where he had been in an induced coma in intensive care.

He suffered serious head and leg injuries when he was thrown from his four-wheel-drive as it crashed through a farm fence in Kokotau Rd, near the family's Carterton home, last Tuesday.

Emergency workers say the father of three may have been thrown out of the sunroof or rear windscreen as the vehicle rolled several times before landing on its side in a paddock.

"He just looked like he was asleep," said his sister, Katrina Moss, yesterday. "That's what was so hard to understand, he was just so peaceful."

Two years ago their father Graham died suddenly of a heart attack while hunting - also close to the family home.

"We were all just getting to that stage where we were coping with that. It's just so amazing that you can be here one moment and gone the next."

She said her younger brother was a popular guy who loved children and was adored by his three girls, aged 14, 13, and 3.

"You couldn't help but like him; he was that sort of person."

Originally from Wairarapa, Mr Hutchings went to Martinborough School and then Wairarapa College.

He moved to Australia when he was 21, but returned last week to help work on the family farm at Kokotau.

He was returning from getting chainsaw oil when he crashed.

Two of his daughters and his former wife had flown from Sydney to be by his side.

A service for Mr Hutchings will be held at the family home at 5pm tomorrow.
