A teenage passenger in a three-car crash west of Hamilton last Thursday died in hospital in Auckland overnight.
The 17-year-old was travelling west on State Highway 23 near Whatawhata shortly before 10pm in a Suzuki Swift.
An eastbound Nissan Bluebird crossed the centreline and collided head-on with the Suzuki, Waikato police said.
The female driver of the Suzuki was in a critical but stable condition in Waikato Hospital, while the driver of the Nissan had serious leg injuries.
The driver of a Hyundai Sonata following the Suzuki managed to brake and avert all but a minor collision.
An investigation by the Waikato serious crash unit was continuing, with investigators awaiting the results of toxicology tests to determine whether alcohol played any part in the crash.
