Newtown senior station officer Nick Fry said the fire was reported at 5.55am.
"Fortunately the weather conditions favoured us. There wasn't much wind, and moisture levels were up," he said.
The fire was mainly in the litter of pine needles below the trees. It has now been handed over to the rural fire service to mop up.
Five fire engines attended.
The cause of the fire was to be investigated.
The spokeswoman said the blaze did not threaten nearby housing and police had been called to control traffic flows up and down Mt Albert Rd.
