A couple who staged an all-too convincing domestic dispute to deter prospective neighbours sparked a police call-out.

A passing member of the public was so concerned by the couple's ''fight'' they called police last night at 8pm.

But officers attending the Ballance St, Masterton address discovered a serene domestic setting, said Senior Sergeant Warwick Burr.

''When police arrived everything was all good.

''The young child there was sitting nice and content and everything was fine.''

The couple then explained to the confused officers that they had staged a fight to ward off prospective tenants, who were being showed around next door by the landlord.

''They were tenants they didn't want there [so] they put on a show and feigned a family violence episode,'' said Burr.

''But they explained everything that had happened.''
