A man is dead after being hit by a truck moments after getting out of a car in Christchurch.
The 43-year-old man was the driver of a car that had pulled over to the side of Pound Rd in Yaldhurst.
He had just stepped out of the car when he was struck by a light truck travelling in the opposite direction about 12.10pm today. It is believed he was in the car with his wife.
Police said it appeared the truck had crossed the centre line and hit the car, which was parked at the start of a driveway. The truck then continued down the road about 10 metres before crashing into a ditch. Two letterboxes were also struck.
Passersby tried to resuscitate the man but he was confirmed dead at the scene by ambulance staff.
Police said no further details of the crash were available yet.
No-one else was believed to have been injured, although the 52-year-old truck driver had been taken to hospital by ambulance for assessment. The passenger in the car was taken to hospital by a family member.
Pound Rd is closed between Ryans Rd and Yaldhurst Rd. The closure is expected to remain in place until 4pm.
The police serious-crash unit and commercial vehicle investigation unit are at the scene.
