A lawyer and mountaineer is in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital after a 140-metre fall from a Fiordland peak called Mt Awful.
John Nankervis fell while climbing the 2192-metre peak in Mt Aspiring National Park on Wednesday, and was rescued by helicopter.
He broke bones in his arm, ribs, wrist, pelvis and back.
Nankervis, a consultant with Wellington law firm Buddle Findlay, is in his 60s and is an experienced climber.
He was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2010 for services to mountaineering.
