Truck rolls on SH1 north of Puhoi.

The driver of a truck which rolled off State Highway 1 has been taken to hospital as a precaution, police say.

Traffic is still being delayed heading north after the crash just before midday.

The southbound driver is believed to be uninjured after losing control of the vehicle at the bottom of Schedewy's Hill north of Puhoi.

Police were uncertain of the truck's cargo but said it was carrying a refrigeration container which fell from the truck.

The single truck roll-over left traffic building both north and south of the accident as police closed the road while tow trucks righted the vehicle.

A single lane was then opened while a container truck with a hoist collected the refrigeration unit.

Traffic built in both directions after the highway was closed so tow trucks could remove the rolled vehicle.

Police were working to determine the cause of the incident.

It was unlikely speed was involved, Sergeant Chris McKenzie of the Waitemata Police highway patrol said.

Lanes were fully open again at 3.15pm but the New Zealand Traffic Agency was warning motorists of northbound delays from Puhoi.
