Man charged after crash that killed mother and baby

A 44-year-old man has been charged following a crash that killed a mother and her baby near Twizel in Canterbury. 

Bhutanese refugee Mon Chhetri, 36, and her 7-month-old son, Aaron Chhetri, died when the vehicle they were travelling in collided with another on the Twizel-Omarama Road (State Highway 8) on April 19.

Her husband, Tula Ram Chhetri, was seriously injured, along with the couple's 7-year-old daughter, Jessica.

In a statement released on Tuesday evening, police said a 44-year-old man was facing two charges of dangerous driving causing death and four charges of dangerous driving causing injury.
 
The man will appear in the Oamaru District Court on November 23.

Police declined to comment further on the case while it was before the court.
