A truck and trailer that rolled has spilled paint and closed a section of SH2.

Paint has been spilled on State Highway 2 after a truck and trailer rolled.

As a result, the highway at Mangatawhiri, about an hour south of Auckland, will be closed for several hours while the spill is cleaned up.

The accident happened approximately 1.5km north of Maramarua Golf Course shortly after 8.30am on Wednesday.

Firefighters expected to be cleaning up after Wednesday morning's paint spill well into the afternoon.

Fire Service spokesman Jaron Phillips said a variety of paint colours, sulfuric acid and paint thinner had spilled onto the road.

Some has gone into the drains and the Waikato Regional Council has been alerted, he said.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Diversions are in place westbound at Rawiri Rd interchange, and eastbound at Mangatawhiri Rd.

Drivers are being advised to allow extra time for their journey or avoid the area where possible.
