Five people injured, one serious, after three-vehicle crash near Porirua
One person is in a serious condition and has been flown to Wellington Hospital after a three-vehicle crash in Porirua.
Five people were injured, including three adults and two children, in a crash involving two cars and a truck on on State Highway 58, between Porirua and Hutt Valley, shortly after 8am on Thursday.
The crash closed SH58, also known as Paremata-Haywards Rd, in both directions, causing huge delays and headaches for morning commuters.
NZTA advised at about 10.40am that SH58 had reopened fully.
Wellington Free Ambulance spokeswoman Di Livingston said one person was in a serious condition after the crash and had been airlifted to Wellington Hospital.
Two people had moderate injuries and two had minor injuries, she said. Two people were taken to Hutt Hospital and two were taken to Wellington Hospital.
A person was briefly trapped in their car, but was freed soon after the accident.
Traffic diversions were place at the intersection of SH2 and SH58 in the Hutt Valley, and at the Pauatahanui roundabout, and drivers were being urged to use SH1 and SH2 as alternative routes - causing the huge traffic jams.
Journalist Kris Dando said he left Stokes Valley at 8.45am and reached Porirua at 10.15am - a journey that normally takes 30 minutes.
Traffic was bumper to bumper all the way, he said.
