The driver of the car carrier truck was not injured in the crash.

A woman in the vehicle suffered critical injuries, Stewart said.

A police spokeswoman said the injured woman was flown to Christchurch Hospital, where she later died.

The woman was the only person in the car.

The truck driver was not injured.

The police serious crash unit was investigating. It was too early to say why the car crossed the centre line.

A section of SH1 was closed for nearly six hours. It reopened about 4.45pm.

Bystander Diana Hall said the carrier truck and a Honda Civic crashed into each other.
