Kai for Kaikoura at Hamilton Gardens
In just three weeks, a Christmas lunch has been organised with hopes of raising around $15,000 for those in Kaikoura affected by the earthquakes.
"Kai for Kaikoura" will take place at the Hamilton Gardens on Tuesday, December 13, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross Kaikoura Earthquake Appeal.
For $50, over 200 diners can enjoy a four course lunch, with a glass of wine or beer, on the banks of Turtle Lake.
Leanne Morris from The Event Company, with the help of Waikato Food Inc, decided to organise the lunch.
Waikato Food Inc chairwoman Vicki Ravlich-Horan said when Morris told her about her idea, she thought she was mad.
"It would normally take months and we are doing it in three weeks. This is a huge event to organise, but we needed to give it a go."
In one week, they pulled together the help, ingredients and equipment needed.
"We could immediately tap into our members and networks with a call for help and we were not disappointed.
"Within a couple of days we had almost all the food we needed to put on an amazing lunch, plus offer for help to prepare and serve it."
The set menu offers a range of local business ingredients such as Volare bread, Pirongia bacon, Over The Moon Dairy, and Raglan Coconut Yoghurt.
All food, drinks, labour, cutlery, linen and entertainment has been donated by businesses including Lewis Road Creamery, Banh Mi Caphe, Invivo Wines, Montana and The Eatery.
Waikato Food Inc is a not-for-profit organisation that helps promote and grow food and hospitality businesses in the Waikato.
Tickets for the lunch are still available on Eventfinda.co.nz.
