A 15 year-old led police on a chase that lasted more than an hour around the lower North Island after stealing a Mainfreight truck in Pukerua Bay last night.

Feilding Sergeant Grant Lawton said the teen was believed to have escaped a hospital, and that he had mental heath issues.

Police began their pursuit about 10.30pm after the teen stole a medium-sized Nissan MK205 diesel truck.

The pursuit continued up the country for more than 100km, coming to an end about 11.49pm only after road spikes were laid out on Cemetery Rd in Sanson.

Another truck was also accidentally spiked.

Palmerston North Senior Sergeant Brett Calkin said the teen was transferred back to Porirua, where a decision would be made as to whether he would be charged.
