A man who jumped a deer fence and fell eight metres after an incident at an Ohakune bar last night has died.

Emergency services were called to Rimu Street, Ohakune, where the 30-year-old was lying unconscious down a bank.

Police said initial inquiries suggested he was involved in an incident at a local bar, and left the premises.

He then walked along a poorly lit area and jumped over a deer fence which had an eight metre drop on the other side.

The man died at the scene, after emergency services staff tried to resuscitate him.

He was not a local resident, and his details would be released when his family had been notified.

The matter had been referred to the coroner.
