A hunter who fell down a 30-metre drop in Whakatane bush last night has been winched from where he was stuck.

Emergency services were called at around 8pm last night, after the man had fallen down a "significant drop" and injured himself.

The terrain, near White Pine Bush, was inaccessible, meaning they could only start the rescue at first light, said an ambulance spokeswoman.

"In the meantime, we'd got officers on the scene to look after the patient - so we had an ambulance officer on the scene, and police search and rescue," she said.

The hunter was taken by helicopter to Whakatane's Emergency Department with moderate injuries.
