An Auckland man is in a stable but critical condition after falling from the 15th floor of an apartment building while trying to climb onto his balcony after locking himself out last night.

The man in his 20s lived on the 14th floor of the Volt Apartment building at the corner of Queen St and Mayoral Drive.

At about 2am this morning he fell while attempting to climb down the outside of the building from a 15th floor apartment directly above his, in an effort to enter his home via the balcony.

The fire service recovered the man from the roof of an adjacent building and he was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

This morning he was still unable to talk, but in a stable condition in the Department of Critical Care at Auckland Hospital.
