Car bursts into flames in Hamilton
One person has been killed in a serious road smash between Hamilton and Te Awamutu.
Emergency services responded to the scene where a van reportedly rolled, a car burst into flames and someone went underneath a vehicle.
State Highway 3 is now closed and traffic is being diverted.
Northern fire communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said the call came in just after 3pm.
Fire appliances from Te Awamutu and Hamilton responded to the incident on Ohaupo Rd. Details were still coming to hand, but Phillips said they understood a van rolled in front of a car and a person had gone under a vehicle.
''I don't know how far out of the city it is, but apparently a van has rolled in front of a car and a person's gone under the car and the car's on fire - it doesn't sound too flash."
Earlier this afternoon in a separate incident a driver veered off the road southwest of Hamilton and had to be cut free of the wreckage.
Emergency services responded to the scene of a on State Highway 39, about 2km south of the intersection with Tuhikaramea Rd, at about 1.40pm.
Phillips said a single car drove off the road into a paddock.
The driver was trapped in the wreckage and the fire service used the jaws of life to cut off one side of the vehicle to tend to the patient.
It's understood the driver suffered serious injuries.
